At Bailamor Dance, we teach the two most popular Latin dance styles, Salsa and Bachata. With a team of highly experienced Canberra-based teachers, we can be sure to get your hips dancing to the Latin rhythms in no time.
Salsa is an amalgamation of Cuban dances, such as mambo, pachanga and rumba, as well as American dances such as swing and tap.
The style was primarily developed by Puerto Ricans and Cubans living in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Different regions of Latin America and the United States (including countries in the Caribbean) have distinct salsa styles of their own, such as Cuban, Puerto Rican, Colombian, and New York styles.
Bachata is a style of social dance from the Dominican Republic. The dance originally was a combination of Cuban son dance, African beats, and bolero music.
More recently, a new form was made popular in Spain, called Bachata Sensual. Bachata Sensual is a mix between dance and theatre with strict follow and lead principles. The dance is an interpretation of the music with mostly circular movements and body waves, except when the music has stronger beats, when the dance uses isolations and dips.
We pride ourselves on having the friendliest, most passionate and technically talented team of instructors to ensure you have the best experience learning to dance with finesse and style. We can’t wait for you to meet them in class.

Jenny's pursuit for continuous improvement has seen her train with some of the most renowned dance instructors in Australia and overseas, as well as choreograph and perform with some of the best dance teams in Canberra. Jenny's passion has led to the opening of Bailamor Dance in 2022, specializing in the three dance styles she loves most, Salsa, Mambo and Bachata. "Dancing is not just a hobby; it is my life. I love to go out social dancing and connecting with people that share the same." - JY
Juan Pablo was born in Spain and grew up listening to Latin music. During his youth, he spent his time playing soccer and learning martial arts. In 2007, he fell in love with Latin Dance after watching "So You Think You Can Dance." He had travelled around the world to learn from different instructors. "Practice. Make sure you go out social dancing because coming to class and not going social dancing is like going to a cooking class and never cooking what you have learnt." - JP
Blanca is from Venezuela and has over 15 years of dance experience; her style is characterised by an ideal mix of different Cuban styles, with a special love for "Casino en Rueda, Orishas and Rumba Cubana". "I have always been passionate about Afro Cuban rhythms, dance style and culture, and the drums irradiate such an authentic and powerful energy that makes my heart and feet dance through them without even thinking." - BO
Lisa stepped into the Latin dance scene in 2006 when a friend dragged her to a free class at a local bar; she was instantly hooked and joined as many classes as she could fit into her schedule. She had tried many different dance styles, including Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha and Brazilian Samba; in the end, she chose Salsa as her primary dance. Lisa's favourite thing about dancing is that it's a fun and social way to keep active. "I have made so many great friendships through the dance scene. I love that dancing keeps me fit and always learning new things." - LM. Outside of dancing, Lisa enjoys taking her very energetic pup on adventures around Canberra.
Hamed started his Latin dance journey in Canberra in 2011. His first term of classes was in both Salsa and Bachata. It didn't take long for him to fall in love with dancing, and he soon found himself performing and competing in different styles. As a Latin dance teacher, Hamed is famously known by his students for his smile and fun classes. Hamed was also a dance competitor and has competed in several competitions nationally, placing first in Canberra social dancing competitions and third in the Australian Latin Dance Championships. Hamed thinks dancing is a great hobby to get involved in, meet new friends, and exercise. It is an activity that brings everyone together. Hamed met his lifelong partner through Latin dance, and they are now married and happy with a young daughter. When Hamed is not dancing, he enjoys family life and teaching at the University of Canberra.

A heels class for Salsa and Bachata dancers is a dynamic class in which participants learn to refine their technique, enhance their styling, and build confidence while dancing in high-heeled shoes. Designed to complement the fluidity and passion of these Latin dance styles, the class focuses on mastering essential techniques and exploring the expressive potential of dancing in heels. This class is perfect for intermediate to advanced Salsa and Bachata dancers who are comfortable with the fundamentals of their style and want to enhance their artistry, technique, and confidence. Beginners with basic knowledge of Salsa or Bachata are also welcome if they’re ready to take on the challenge of dancing in heels.
Bachata Beginner introduces the basics of Bachata dancing with influences from Sensual and Dominican Bachata, including dancing on the beat and basic social dance patterns with a partner. This class heavily emphasizes fundamentals and is a crucial platform for our student's development in the coming levels. This class is open to all students with minimal to no Bachata dancing experience.
Bachata Improver teaches variations of social dancing patterns in both linear and circular and focuses on improving posture, technique and body movement. Notably, this level introduces students to Dominican Bachata footwork syncopation to help them understand the music and add flair to their footwork on the social dance floor. Students can register to join this level after completing two terms of Bachata Beginner classes or equivalent.
Salsa Beginner introduces the basics of On 1 Salsa dancing or LA Salsa, dancing on the first beat, with basic footwork and turn patterns. Due to this Salsa style's timing and linear patterns, it is easier for beginners to learn. This class heavily emphasizes fundamentals and is a crucial platform for our student's development in the coming levels. This class is open to all students with minimal to no Salsa dancing experience.
In Salsa Level 2, we will teach variations of the turn patterns taught in previous levels and expand your knowledge and understanding of Salsa fundamentals. We will focus on improving your balance, technique and musicality to increase confidence and make you have more fun on the social dance floor. Students can register to join this level after completing Salsa Beginner or equivalent.
To continue building a foundation for shines, start with more variation patterns, improve paperwork and start combining a few patterns as a combo.
